The main themes of my work in this project is how the male gaze impacts women. My project also links to the theme of surveillance because the male gaze involves people staring, judging, and treating bodies as objects. I wanted my work to show the impact of the male gaze on women and make viewers feel ashamed and uncomfortable about its mental and physical effects. Many artists and sociologists like Bell Hook and Laura Mulvey inspired my project but the book "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilmanwas a primary source. I created environments where the viewer, who embodies the male gaze, becomes the watcher.
I linoprinted wallpaper surrounding the walls, trapping the viewer in the room while watching a woman's mental state deteriorate due to the gaze (see video below). My work aims to highlight the discomfort of being the object of the gaze and to show the impact and mental spiral when one internalizes the gaze. I added Yellow lighting and had on the TV the video constantly playing which I edited of different movie adaptations of the book together. This video was also shown in our courses exhibition in New House Arts Space, Guildford 14th-19th May 2025.
